Saints’ red-hot start sinks the Seagulls

PASADENA, CA – The Arroyo Seco Saints (13-11) defeated the San Francisco Seagulls (7-20) on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Field by way of a 9-8 final score.

Following a win against the San Diego Bombers, the Saints were looking to put up back-to-back victories. The San Francisco Seagulls were aiming to snag a win after a 18-2 loss against the Sonoma Stompers.

Saints’ coaching staff chose their two-way player, Cody Turner, to start on the bump for the squad.

Through the first two innings, Turner didn’t allow any runs or hits for the Seagulls.

The Saints’ wasted no time in getting their offense started with a base hit from Trotter Enright (Long Beach State) and an RBI double for Jacob Freer (Azusa Pacific). Turner and Levi Maddela (Transfer Portal) kept the momentum going with two more RBIs, tallying the score to 3-0.

The Saints added four more runs to extend their lead in the 2nd inning. Lane Haworth (Transfer Portal) had his first home run of the season that traveled 367 feet over the wall. Freer and Turner added two RBIs, and Maddela put up a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-0.

Turner’s no-hitter shortly ended when Seagull’s infielder Alan Ramirez (San Jose State) got on base with a single. Jackson Byrd (UC Riverside) followed with an RBI single to put the Seagulls on the board.

In the 3rd inning, Haworth had another base hit and scored on a throwing error. Enright had an RBI groundout to bring in Noah Williams (Colorado State Pueblo) who walked in his at bat.

Both sides stayed quiet through the next four innings. In the 8th, the Seagulls attempted to chip away at the Saints’ lead with a few base hits, walks, and hit by pitches.

The Saints’ pitching staff allowed three hit by pitch RBIs, two walk RBIs, and one RBI single. To make it 8 runs, Mark Zhu (City College of San Francisco) scored on an earned run.

The Seagulls tried to catch up to the Saints’ nine runs in the 9th, but closing pitcher Daniel Tovar (Transfer Portal) secured the win for the Saints 9-8.

Aaron Treloar, Saints’ pitching coach, shared how he kept his pitching staff focused in the 8th inning.

“It’s baseball, there is [going to] be big innings for both sides so it’s [about] not getting too worked up in the moment,” Treloar explained. “And understanding that we have a ton of talent on the team and  a bunch of guys that can take the reins, slow down the game, and take control of the game too.”

Offensively, seven of the Saints’ starting hitters had at least one hit on the night. Freer, Turner, and Maddela had two RBIs each.

Looking ahead, the Saints will be back at home to face the San Diego Waves at 6:05 p.m. PST. The Saints squad hopes to extend their winning streak to three as they get further into the summer season.
